History read
The story of the fig began with Adam and Eve and it was considered to be a divine fruit, the fruit of paradise. It is the first mentioned fruit in the Bible. The fig was the food of the rich and the poor in Anatolia and Egypt in early ages. They have been used as sweetener in foods long before the advent of refined sugars and have traveled to America through Spaniards in 1520.

The cultivated fig, Ficus carica, derives its name from the ancient region of Ciara in western Turkey, was found in the Anatolian region for thousands of years and is a member of the mulberry family. Turkey is producing 2/3 of its figs near the Aydin region, called the “Smyrna Figs”.

Description read
Turkey leads the world production with %55 and %85-%90 of the Turkish production is exported. Although the list of the importing countries are increasing every year, %70 of the exports go to the European countries.

Since fig has a fragile structure, its trade worldwide has started only 10-15 years ago. The famous Smyrna Figs require pollination for the fruit to set, for which tiny wasps are needed.

Dried figs have one of the highest contents of polyphenols – substances thought to offer the benefit of reduced cancer risk. They are also rich in Amino Acids, Vitamins, Dietary Fiber and Calcium.
